The Moonlight Tale is a small world play set of 22 wooden pieces — Nins, baby Nins, mushrooms, acorns, and quietly beautiful shapes that don't quite have a name, only a feeling. The colours are soft and muted: the grey-blues and dusty lilacs of a forest after dark, when anything could happen.

There's no script. No game to win. A child might arrange the pieces into a sleeping village, line them up for a night-time procession, or build a whole world around one tiny acorn that becomes, in their hands, the most important thing in the kingdom. The story is entirely theirs.

This is what open-ended play looks like at its most imaginative — your child isn't following a character someone else created. They're creating the character. The plot. The ending. And very likely, a sequel.

A collaboration between Grapat and Berlin-based designer @gretasschwester, the Moonlight Tale is one of those sets that tends to stay out on the shelf long after other toys get rotated away.

Handmade in Spain from sustainably sourced wood, finished with water-based, non-toxic dyes. Each piece is painted by hand — no two are exactly alike. A light natural scent upon opening is normal and fades within a few days.

Grapat Dear Universe

Before your child can name the planets, they're already drawn to them — the different sizes, the soft layered colours, the weight of something round and smooth in a small hand.

Dear Universe is a set of more than 40 wooden pieces: 10 planets in varying sizes and colours, a scattering of pearly moons, and 36 tiny stars. There's no rocket ship. No astronaut figurine. No prescribed story. Just the raw, quiet invitation of the cosmos, rendered in wood and handed to a child to make sense of in their own way.

Some children arrange them by size — biggest to smallest, a solar system of their own logic. Some build little worlds on the floor, tucking stars around a planet like a village settling in for the night. Others use them alongside their other Grapat pieces, where a planet becomes a boulder, a moon becomes a coin, and the universe quietly folds itself into whatever story is being told today.

For families who use the Grapat 7 Moons Weekly Calendar, there's a lovely connection to discover: the days of the week were originally named after planets. Monday for the Moon, Saturday for Saturn, Sunday for the Sun. Matching them becomes a small ritual — a way of noticing time that children tend to hold onto.
